Submission Guidelines

Would you like to submit essays, writing, or art for Kyodai? Here's what you need to know:

Essays and Other Writing

Are you interested in writing for Kyodai?

What we're looking for

Thoughtful pieces on topics from the Boruto series that will enlighten or enrich readers and/or viewers. This might be a deep dive into a character, an analysis of the writing process of the series based on interviews with the writers, an analysis of how traditional anime tropes are manifesting or subverted in the series, a personal essay about the intersections between real life and the series, translation analysis, maybe even poetry inspired by the series!

What we're not looking for

We don't want content that fuels internal or external fandom arguments. Fandom spaces are rich for inspiration, but we want pieces that reach beyond the low-hanging fruit of conventional discourse. You're not defending the series or a character. Likewise, we will not accept works that foment bias against characters in the series, ships, or aspects of the franchise.

Submitting Pitches

How do you let us know you're interested in submitting writing or art to Kyodai?

Pitch us at shearboltfanfic@gmail.com

What Are Pitches?

Pitches are proposals of the writing world, a short and snappy summary of what you want to write or draw. From that proposal, we'll be able to get a sense of your style, whether your idea fits what we're looking for, and help us manage the offerings of our publication!

You can include up to three pitches in a submission if you have multiple ideas.

What to Include in a Pitch

Tell us a little bit about who you are. (e.g., Hi! My name is ShearBolt! I've been a member of the Boruto fandom starting in 2021. I have a passion for media critiques and literary analysis.)

Tell us what you want to write or draw. If you have a title for your submission, share it. (e.g., Fathers of Shinobi and Mothers of Kings: In this essay, I'd like to compare and contrast the treatment of parental figures in Boruto with how they are depicted in Ranking of Kings. While both series depict worlds of war, monsters, and power, Ranking of Kings focuses on the power of mothers while Boruto explores the dynamics between fathers and their children. We'll delve into how fathers in Ranking of Kings are treated as agents of conflict and violence who use or abandon their wives in search of power while the mothers in Boruto rarely get a starring role in their children's lives.)

Tell us why this story is important to readers. (e.g., When we discuss the role of parents in Boruto, these discussions often leave out how families are depicted in other series. Like Boruto, Ranking of Kings is a series about young boys who leave their home and return to a world on the verge of collapse, far more powerful than they were before. Both are going through the experience of having their lives usurped by their brothers as well, which is why Ranking of Kings is an excellent series to contrast with Boruto).

Let us know if you'd like to forgo compensation. Otherwise, we'll assume this is a paid submission. (e.g., I'm offering this article for free as your paltry $15 means nothing to me.)

Include any additional information you think we should know. An example would be if English isn't your first language, and you are concerned you'll need additional editorial support.

Compensation will be offered via PayPal or Ko-Fi for writing and art.

Please accept our pay rates as appreciation for your work. It's not a fair wage, and we know this. It's what we're able to offer on a monthly basis, given that this is an out-of-pocket labor of love.
